Hospitalist Care

Doctor speaking with elderly man about patient care

Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for patients during their hospital stays. One of our qualified hospitalists will be in charge of your care during your stay at Newton Medical Center. If you are in the hospital for many days, you may see more than one hospitalist. These doctors are available to you and your family to answer questions and discuss your care.

If consultations by other physicians are necessary while you are in the hospital, your hospitalist will arrange these. If you regularly see other doctors, be sure to let us know so we can keep them informed of your hospitalization.

After you are discharged, your hospitalist will provide a summary to your primary care physician including all pertinent information regarding your hospitalization, medications and any further treatment and future appointments needed. If you do not have a primary care physician, your hospitalist or other hospital staff can assist in finding a physician for you, and records from your hospital stay can be sent to this physician.

Telemedicine Program

Between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., Newton Medical Center utilizes telemedicine, one of the latest innovations in hospital care. This technology brings expert physician care to patients’ bedsides through remote videoconferencing.

Physicians are able to communicate directly, face to face, with patients and staff at the hospital via a robot on a rolling stand; the robot is equipped with a digital stethoscope and other diagnostic equipment, as well as a videoconferencing monitor and camera. The physician can securely access a patient’s electronic medical record and test results. Working behind the scenes is a cloud-based telehealth network that enables the connection between patients, their families and the physician. In this way, the physicians partner with hospital staff to provide top-quality care.

This program is made possible through a partnership with Eagle Telemedicine, an Atlanta-based provider that is a pioneer in the field. The Eagle team at Newton Medical Center is made up of experienced hospitalist physicians who are partners in the Kansas-based Sunflower Telemedicine LLC. These Kansas physicians work closely with other clinical staff as an integral part of the hospital’s healthcare team.
