Pulmonary rehabilitation plays an important role in the comprehensive medical management of patients with chronic respiratory disease. Research shows that pulmonary rehabilitation programs provide the greatest improvements in symptoms, exercise capacity and health-related quality of life of any therapy available for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This type of program has also shown effective with other respiratory disorders, such as chronic asthma and restrictive lung diseases.
The pulmonary rehabilitation program at Newton Medical Center provides a monitored and medically-supervised environment to help manage the symptoms of respiratory disease.
NMC’s pulmonary rehabilitation program consists of a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and dieticians. Overseen by a program medical director, the team designs a comprehensive program specific to each patient’s needs.
Patients in the program meet with their team twice a week, for nine to eighteen weeks, as medically necessary. At the beginning of the program, patients undergo an evaluation to determine what track of the program best suits their needs. In addition to the customized plan, pulmonary rehabilitation includes:
- Education on nutrition, exercise, pulmonary disease and management of symptoms
- Lifestyle change support
- Smoking cessation resources (when necessary)
- Stress management tools
Throughout the program, pulmonary rehabilitation patients will gain education on topics such as:
- Changes that occur to the lungs with COPD and other respiratory diseases
- Breathing retraining techniques
- Medication management
- Inhaler use
- The relationship between nutrition and COPD
- Infection control and when to call the doctor
- Energy conservation
Located in the main hospital building, NMC’s pulmonary rehabilitation gym is equipped with specialized exercise equipment to help meet the needs of each patient. Our high-tech NuStep machines are specifically designed for the rehabilitation setting. They allow any user, no matter what age or ability level, to take steps towards increasing strength and endurance. The gym also includes aerobic and resistance exercise equipment such as upper body bicycles, treadmills, free weights and resistance bands.
During each rehabilitation session, patients will wear a heart and oxygen monitor to help the rehabilitation team know the physical impact of each activity. Patients will also be coached on how to exercise at an intensity that enables them to receive maximum benefits.
Individuals with any of the following diagnoses may be a candidate for our pulmonary rehabilitation program:
- COPD (Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis)
- Gold Class II through IV
- Restrictive lung diseases such as Sarcoidosis or Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Chronic Asthma
